Lunar New Year Festivities

Wednesday, Feb. 9 marks the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, and events are planned all week in Chinatown to celebrate “The Year of the Rooster.” Many of the events are run by the Explore Chinatown campaign and the Better Chinatown Society, and funded by The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and the September 11th Fund. Flower Market-

Feb. 5th and 6th

The flower market will take place at the Roosevelt Park at Grand and Chrystie Sts. It opens Saturday, Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is organized by the Museum of Chinese in the Americas and the United East Athletics Association.

Firecracker Ceremony-

Feb. 9th

Two detonations will take place. One will be on the intersection of Mott Street and Bayard Street at noon. The other will be at Market Street and East Broadway at 2 p.m. At both intersections, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. stages will feature all day cultural performances by traditional and contemporary singers and dancers.

Parade & Festival-

Feb. 13th

The parade hosted from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. features floats, marching bands, musicians, acrobats, magicians, and processions by local organizations. The parade will begin at Mott Street and proceed through all of Chinatown ending at Worth Street. When the parade ends, there will be an outdoor cultural festival on Bayard Street.

Art exhibit- running through April 30th

Art & Healing: Celebrating Chinese Artists in NY at NYU Downtown Hospital, located at 170 William Street, is sponsoring a special free exhibition of Downtown Chinese-American artists. The show is taking place in the Hospital’s main lobby. It is open and free to the public.
