Two students at the High School of Graphic Communication Arts in Manhattan allegedly stabbed each other during a fight on Tuesday afternoon, cops said.
Law enforcement sources said cops from the Midtown North Precinct responded to a 911 call about an assault at the school, located at 439 W. 49 St. in Hell’s Kitchen, at approximately 1:20 p.m. on May 14.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police learned that two male students were involved in a physical altercation that eventually turned bloody, official sources said. While arguing, one student took out a knife and stabbed the other in the torso area.
The other student also had a sharp object and slashed his assailant in the face, police said.
EMS rushed both students to a nearby hospital in stable condition, law enforcement sources said; both were taken into police custody in connection with the case.
No additional suspects are being sought, and criminal charges are pending the results of an ongoing investigation.
Jenna Lyle, a spokesperson for the Department of Education, said the school was placed on a brief lockdown. She also provided a statement to amNew York.
“The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority,” Lyle said. “Violence has absolutely no place in our schools, and this behavior is unacceptable. Our outstanding school staff and NYPD School Safety Agents immediately responded to an incident between students at the school, and the school was placed under a soft lockdown, which has now been lifted. We will be providing additional emotional support to any student who needs it.”
At around 2 p.m. on May 14, police and EMS vehicles were seen parked in front of the school as crowds gathered.
The incident follows a double stabbing at at Martin Van Buren High School in Bellerose, Queens, on Feb. 1 that forced the school to briefly place students on lockdown until they were dismissed from the campus at approximately 2:30 p.m. EMS brought both students involved in the incident to a local hospital in stable condition.
