Morgenthau to rededicate S.S. Lilac

The S.S. Lilac, the steamship that brought supplies and crews to and from East Coast lighthouses in the 1930s, will be rededicated at 11 a.m. Fri. May 21 at its berth on the north side of Pier 40 at the west end of Houston St. in Hudson River Park. Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau, president of the Police Athletic League, will preside at the ceremony. PAL members are restoring the Lilac, owned by a nonprofit group of maritime preservationists, as part of PAL’s educational Maritime Adventure Program. The ship will also serve as a floating classroom for several other education groups and host arts programs, community meetings and weekend open ship tours.
