New York University has installed a new supercomputer system ranked as the fastest in New York City and the 117th fastest in the world.
The acquisition of the IBM eServer BladeCenter system was made possible by a gift from IBM and federal funding from the Office of Naval Research and the Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, according to David McLaughlin, provost of the university.
The new system, in operation since May, has already supported research in the Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences’s Center for Atmosphere-Ocean Science and the Courant’s work on genomics and bioinformatics.
The IBM technology enabled the university to connect a cluster of existing computer systems and solve the challenge of building a supercomputer in limited N.Y.U. space in Manhattan, according to Marilyn McMillan, associate provost.
IBM is also working with N.Y.U. to create a joint test center for developers of high-performance computing applications using the IBM BladeCenter with the Linux system.
