N.Y.U. has record number of freshman applications

New York University has received 35,073 applications for freshman admission for September 2006, the largest number of applications in the university’s history. N.Y.U. receives more freshman admission applications than any other private university in the country.

Applications for freshman admission have more than tripled since 1991 and the university has become more selective; its acceptance rate during that period declined from 65 percent to 29 percent for freshmen who entered last fall. The freshman application deadline was Jan. 15 and the university will notify applicants of a decision on April 1. Those who accept must notify N.Y. U. by May 1. The freshman class in the fall of 2006 will include a total of about 4,150 men and women.
