New hotels coming in Chinatown area on Grand and Chrystie Sts.

An eight-story, 49,000-square-foot Best Western hotel is being built on the southwest side of Grand St. and Bowery in Chinatown. Ran Oron, founder of Roart, the architecture firm designing the building, said the hotel will be architecturally unique because it’s being built atop two existing banks, Chase and North Fork (soon to be Capital One).

The hotel should be completed in 2007, Oron said. The lobby will be on the second floor, and 102 rooms will be built from the third through eighth floors. The building formerly had four stories, with offices on the second through fourth floors. According to the Department of Buildings, the expansion is as of right.

The owner of the site is Philip Rudnick of Hanbee Realty, located in Flushing. Rudnick is also planning a 60-room Comfort Inn on Chrystie St. between Hester and Canal Sts.
