Canal Park award for ‘Gridlock’ Sam

“Gridlock” Sam Schwartz’s traffic engineering firm has just received the National Pride Award from The American Road & Transportation Builders Association for its community relations/design mediation work on Canal Park. Schwartz worked with the Tribeca Community Association and traffic agencies to come up with a plan to ease traffic problems and create a park in the middle of the street.

When the state Dept. of Transportation proposed traffic changes opposed by local residents, two neighborhood groups, Canal West Coalition and the T.C.A., sued the state and discovered the area in question was a long-forgotten park that had been illegally converted into a parking lot.

Peter near Wall St.

Peter, Paul and Mary songs often evoke nostalgia for many, and on June 7, one band member will be calling forth a different kind of sentiment from parents and educators at Claremont Prep. Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul and Mary, will hold a concert and seminar entitled, “Operation Respect” at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. The theme of the evening is to inform parents and teachers about school bullying and is open to the public.

“It’s really to teach adults how to work with their child or student to respect one another, treating each other well and not bullying each other,” said Julie Koster, head of admissions at Claremont Prep located at 41 Broad St.
