With people fired up over the tough new Arizona law on immigration, May Day at Union Square drew a mass rally, this year focusing on immigrants. Speakers called the Arizona law “draconian.” They cited Scripture instructing that “strangers” not be mistreated. Activist Larry Holmes led the crowd in a chant, “No Worker Is Illegal!” Many were Mexican, but there were also many from other Latin American nations, like the couple from Honduras, below left. Starting in the mid-1800s, Union Square has been a site for rallies and political protests.
