Musicians played toy instruments last month in the Soho loft of Daniel Goode and Ann Snitow as part of “Toy Symphony.” Instruments included water whistles, sandpaper blocks, tiny accordions, locust pods, plastic hammers, slap sticks and pink whistling lips.
The new group, Gamelan Son of Lion, is a music repertory ensemble specializing in contemporary pieces written for the instruments of the Javanese gamelan. The ensemble was begun by a core group of composers: Barbara Benary, Goode, and Philip
Corner.
It was the first event in the space since a fire during the summer damaged a number of lofts in the building on the corner of Spring St. and W. Broadway.
