Ashes to ashes and mulch to mulch… . These trees’ short lives ended when they were chopped down to be sold for Christmas (at astronomical prices, especially in Downtown Manhattan). Now trees, like these in Washington Square Park, are being readied for chipping at MulchFest 2017, with the chips —not surprisingly — used for mulch. The “treecycling” happens Sat., Jan. 7, and Sun., Jan. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to Washington Square, other chipping locations include Tompkins Square Park and Stuyvesant Town. Trees can also be dropped off on E. 14th St. at Union Square South, though apparently it is not a designated chipping spot.
