Prodigal horse returns
Aldo, an 8-year-old police horse, reared and threw his police rider around 2 p.m. Fri., May 2 at Sixth Ave. and Prince St. when a passing motorcycle backfired. The officer, a 22-year N.Y.P.D. veteran with six years as a mounted cop, sustained a minor shoulder injury and was treated at St. Vincent’s Hospital and released, police said.
The riderless Aldo cantered down Sixth Ave. against traffic toward the Mounted Police stable at the First Precinct and veered west at Watts St. where he slammed into a small black SUV going toward the Holland Tunnel entrance. The rear door of the vehicle was bashed in and the window broken. The driver, who spoke little English, kept saying “big horse.” He was shaken but unhurt.
Aldo, a police horse for about a year, went on to Varick St., turned south and came to a halt at the stable on Varick at Ericsson Pl. The horse sustained a few minor cuts, police said.
Nail polish removed John Mitchell, 16, was arrested on April 24 and charged with stealing about 200 bottles of nail polish on two occasions from same the Duane Reade store at 130 William St. and injuring an employee who confronted him, a spokesperson for District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said.
The first incident was on March 6 at 10:30 a.m. when a surveillance camera recorded Mitchell and two unapprehended accomplices stuffing 144 bottles of nail polish valued at $1,169 into their backpacks and leaving the place without paying, the spokesperson said.
Mitchell returned alone to the store on Thurs., April 24 and was filling his backpack with an unspecified number of nail polish bottles when an employee approached, according to the D.A. Mitchell is charged with pushing the employee into the shelves, which collapsed. The employee sustained nerve damage to her finger and arm, according to the complaint.
Mitchell, of E. 129th St., was freed on $5,000 bail pending an Aug. 6 arraignment on charges of fourth degree grand larceny and second degree robbery.
Cop kicked Julbe Tommy, of 333 Lafayette St., was arrested on Wed., April 30 for stealing two boxes of tools from a truck parked on Lafayette St. at E. Houston St. and kicking an arresting officer in the groin and the knee, according to a spokesperson for the district attorney.
Police chased the suspect to a nearby subway station where he kicked an arresting officer who was handcuffing him, according to prosecutors. The injured officer was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital where he was diagnosed with a torn knee ligament.
Tommy, 45, was being held in lieu of $20,000 bail pending a June 9 arraignment on charges of third degree burglary and assaulting a law enforcement officer. The high bail was based on the assualt and the defendant’s previous criminal record, the spokesperson said.
Arrested in City Hall swipe
Police arrested Kenneth Washington, 43, in the City Hall subway station about 5 p.m. Sun., May 4 and charged him with grand larceny and possession of stolen property for taking a cell phone from a man who was sleeping in the station. The suspect, a Bronx resident, was also charged with possession of a forged instrument after three bent MetroCards were found in his pocket, according to a spokesperson for the district attorney. Bending MetroCards can add to their value. Washington was held in lieu of $5,000 bail pending arraignment on May 9.
Knife incident Police arrested Sergei Kramtsov, of 222 Lafayette St. near Cleveland Pl. at about 12:40 p.m. Tues., April 22 and charged him with menacing a man with a knife and smashing a stone pot outside a restaurant at 218 Lafayette St. The victim fled into the restaurant and locked himself just before the suspect arrived and banged a gravity knife against the window, then broke the pot, according to news reports. Kramtsov, 41, was freed on $5,000 bail pending a May 21 arraignment on charges of second degree menacing, fourth degree weapon possession and criminal mischief, according to a district attorney spokesperson.
Fatal B.P.C. fall Park Enforcement officers found Anthony Mitchell, 48, mortally injured amidst broken glass in front of River Terrace, 400 Chambers St. in Battery Park City shortly before 4 a.m. Mon., May 5 and called the Emergency Medical Team who declared him dead at the scene. Police said the victim, an attorney, might have fallen accidentally from the balcony of his sixth floor apartment and referred the case to the Medical Examiner’s Office where an investigation is pending.
Break-in apology A burglar who used a piece of lumber to shatter the window of Jack Spade Clothes, 56 Greene St. near Broome St., at 1:40 a.m. Sun., April 13 and took sunglasses and wallets from a display case was recorded by a surveillance camera, police said. John Kramer, 21, of 304 W. 75th St., was arrested on Thurs., April 17 and charged with burglary and larceny. Police said Kramer told them, “I’m sorry, I made a mistake. Can I come back with the stuff?” He is free on bail pending a July 28 court appearance.
