Horse-car collision
Police arrested Mike Sheehan, 60, a Fox 5 television news correspondent, at 10:30 p.m. Mon., March 30 and charged him with driving while impaired and hitting a horse and his mounted police rider at the intersection of Hudson and N. Moore Sts. a block from the Mounted Unit stable attached to the First Precinct in Tribeca.
The collision shattered the driver’s side window and mirror of Sheehan’s 2008 blue Mercury and dented the driver’s side door, according to the complaint filed by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
The horse, identified as No. 0802, bolted until the mounted officer, Michael Loiacono, regained control two blocks away at W. Broadway, the complaint says. The horse sustained cuts to the left hind thigh and swelling of the right front knee, according to the charges. The officer had a minor injury to his right leg.
When Sheehan got out of the car after the incident, he said to an officer, “What’s the matter, I didn’t hit nothing,” the complaint says. The defendant appeared drunk but refused to take an alcohol breath test, according to the charges.
Sheehan’s lawyer, Thomas Monaghan, was quoted saying that Sheehan was not drunk and that the horse ran into the car. Sheehan had been a decorated detective and N.Y.P.D. veteran of 25 years before he became a news correspondent. He was freed on his own recognizance pending a May 19 court date.
School bus crash
A mini school bus with two children as passengers crashed near police headquarters into the metal police barrier across Pearl St. at the Avenue of the Finest on the north side of the Brooklyn Bridge ramp at 8:30 a.m. Thurs., March 26, police said. The driver and the two children were slightly injured and taken to New York Downtown Hospital. There was no arrest and police were investigating the circumstances of the incident.
Robbed on W. Houston
A woman, 25, was walking on Thompson and W. Houston Sts. at 3:45 p.m. Sun., March 22 when a stranger came up and grabbed her bag, police said. The victim held onto the bag but the thief tore it from her hand and fled, police said.
Burglars flee
A burglar who climbed through a window in a residential building on Franklin St. near Broadway at 11:35 a.m. Mon., March 30 ran into a woman tenant and fled back out again, police said.
A woman resident of a first floor apartment on Hester St. near Mott St. heard a suspicious noise around 11:15 p.m. Sun., March 22 and went to the kitchen to investigate, police said. The resident, 22, saw a flashlight shining into her kitchen widow and a moment later saw the burglar climbing in. The suspect fled when he spotted the woman, police said.
A.T.M. stolen
Unknown thieves stole an automated teller machine and the $200 in it from in front of 116 W. Houston St. between Thompson and Sullivan Sts. sometime during the early hours of Fri., March 20, police said. A neighbor called the owner at 8 a.m. to report the theft and the last recorded withdrawal was at about 3 a.m., police said.
