Woman is all right after tumble onto the tracks
Police and firefighters removed a woman by stretcher from the subway station at Spring St. and Sixth Ave. on Thursday afternoon April 23, after receiving a call about someone falling onto the train tracks. The woman was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent’s Hospital, although the report stated that she was “up and walking” after the incident, according to a Fire Department spokesperson.
Stolen A.T.M.’s
Valentin Garcia, 35, arrested after he jumped into the East River while fleeing police on the Lower East Side around 3 a.m. Tues., April 21, was charged as a suspect in several robberies of A.T.M.‘s on the Lower East Side and elsewhere since December, according to complaints filed by the Manhattan District Attorney.
Garcia was arrested after police said he tried to steal a cash machine outside a store at 23 Rutgers St. by ramming it with his van on April 21. He fled on foot from the scene, ran three blocks down Rutgers, across South St. and jumped into the river, police said. When a police harbor crew pulled him out of the water, he reportedly said, “I wasn’t in the van. I don’t know anything about A.T.M. machines.”
At his booking at the Seventh Precinct, Garcia used the single phone call he was allowed to tell a friend, “Get all of the cash out of my mattress,” police said.
Garcia is a suspect in an April 12 incident in which a man driving a white van stole an A.T.M. from in front of 352 W. 52nd St. On March 20, an A.T.M. on W. Houston St. was knocked down and hauled away in a van. The same kind of theft took place on the Lower East Side in January and a similar one occurred in December on the Lower East Side.
Garcia is also charged with driving his car into a towing service employee on April 8, knocking him down and driving off.
He was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail pending a July 23 court appearance.
Waiting for food
Police arrested Kenneth Morgan, 55, a resident of Bowery Mission and charged him with burglary and larceny after employees of a restaurant at 357 W. Broadway between Grand and Broome Sts. found him on the second floor around 2 a.m. Wed., April 22, rummaging around, police said. “I’m waiting for food from the restaurant,” the suspect told an employee, according to the charges. Police were called after one of the workers discovered his iPod was missing. Morgan was being held pending a May 15 court appearance.
Greenhouse jawbreaker
A patron of Greenhouse, the bar at 150 Varick St. between Vandam and Spring Sts, told police that two men punched him in the face during an argument in the bar at 4 a.m., Wed., April 8. The victim, 32, went to the hospital where he was treated for a broken jaw. His assailants were described as white men in their 20s about 6 ft., wearing jeans, one wearing a blue T shirt and the other wearing a white T shirt with a gray hooded sweat shirt.
Cell phone muggings
A woman talking on her cell phone on the northeast corner of Sullivan and Prince Sts. at 8:15 p.m. Tues., April 7 was approached from behind by a man who tried to take her shoulder bag, police said. The suspect also slashed her right arm several times with an undetermined weapon, police said. The victim, 38, was able to take her pepper spay can from her coat pocket and sprayed the suspect, who was described by police as a black or Hispanic male. The mugger grabbed her cell phone and fled, police said.
A woman walking on the northeast corner of King St. at Sixth Ave. was talking on her cell phone at 10:15 a.m. Wed., April 22 when a black man came from behind, hit her in the back and covered her mouth with his hand, police said. The victim, 26, struggled with the mugger when he tried to take her handbag from her shoulder, so he grabbed her cell phone and fled west on King St., police said.
Police have not connected the two crimes.
Jamba hold-up
A man wearing a black ski mask walked into a Jamba Juice store at 25 W. Houston St. between Mercer and Greene Sts. at 7:15 p.m. after closing time on Wed., April 8 waving a black handgun at the four employees, police said. He grabbed money from the register, said, “Yo, go to safe,” and forced one of the employees to open a floor safe. The suspect, described as an Asian man 5’9” and 170 lbs., fled with a total of $2,900, police said.
Lowered the boom
A Hoboken man, a patron of Boom, the bar at 152 Spring St., got into an argument with a woman who hit him in the face with a glass at about 10:30 p.m. Wed., April 8, police said. The victim, 33, was treated at the scene by an E.M.S. team and the suspect, Denise Cavassa, 46, was charged with second degree assault.
Friends no more
A woman resident of 20 West St. told police that an argument in her apartment with a friend turned violent at 3:20 a.m. Tues., April 28 when he shoved her against the furniture, grabbed her cell phone and threw her to the floor when she tried to get it back. The suspect fled and the victim told police she didn’t know where he was living at this time.
Auto break-in and theft
A man who parked his car on the northeast corner of Hudson and Vandam Sts at 2:30 p.m. Sat., April 25 returned a few hours later to find the driver’s side window smashed and his laptop, four computer flash drives and his passport had been stolen.
A motorist who parked his 2005 black Nissan Maxima on Grand St. between Wooster and W. Broadway at 11 p.m. Sat., April 25 returned four hours later and found it had been stolen.
Motorcycle gone
A man who parked his 2006 red Kawasaki motorcycle on North End Ave. between Warren St. and Park Pl. W. at 6:55 a.m. Tues., April 28 returned in the evening to find it had been stolen.
