Police closed off Delancey St. for several hours on June 14 after an elderly Brooklyn man was struck and killed by a car. The man’s shopping bags and coat, above, were left on the street as police responded to the scene.
Assaults store employee
A man walked into a store at 203 Allen St. near Stanton St. at 1 p.m. Sun. June 19, waved a handgun and demanded money from the employee behind the counter, police said. The robber hit the attendant with the gun and fled empty handed. The victim was treated at Bellevue hospital for facial lacerations.
Delancey St. fatal
A 95-year-old Brooklyn man was killed on Wednesday afternoon June 14 when an eastbound car on Delancey at Eldridge St. hit him at 3:55 p.m. as he was crossing Delancey from the south to the north side, police said. The victim, Isaac Banda, of 218 Penn St., Brooklyn, was taken to Beth Israel hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. There was no arrest.
Smoking break-in
Circa Tabac, a bar at 32 Watts St. that sells a variety of tobacco and has a license allowing patrons to smoke, was the target of one or more burglars who broke through a metal gate and used a master key to open the door on the night of May 28, police said. The suspects made off with $1,900 in cash and a flat-screen television monitor valued at $5,000, police said.
Probe fatal cab ride
Police are still investigating the circumstances of the June 11 cab accident in which Danielle Ricco, 21, a Pace University student, was killed and her three friends were seriously injured when their cab driver, Hasan Afzal, 21, lost control of the vehicle on the West Side Highway at W. Houston St.
Afzal blamed the accident on a mechanical failure, but the surviving passengers said he had collapsed over the wheel before the cab flipped into the opposite lane of traffic. Ricco was flung from the cab and an oncoming cab hit her. Afzal, a Pakistani immigrant, had been taking medication at one time to control seizures, but had stopped and was not taking any recently, according to reports.
Robbed on Broadway
Two robbers waylaid a man who was walking on Broadway north of Canal St. at about 4 a.m. May 6, police said. They knocked him to the ground and took his BlackBerry, credit cards and other documents. The robbers, described only as black males, told the victim they would return his possessions if he would go to an ATM and give them $400. The victim refused and the robbers fled. Police said the suspects had made seven unauthorized calls on the stolen BlackBerry.
Soho mugging
A man came up behind a woman as she was entering her building at 73 Wooster St. at about 6:30 p.m. Sun. June 11, knocked her to the ground, took her bag with personal documents and a BlackBerry and fled, police said. Detectives are examining images taken by a surveillance camera at the entrance of the building in the investigation of the incident.
Open window
One or more burglars entered an apartment at 107 Sullivan St. near Spring St. on Thursday night June 15 and made off with a flat-screen television, a laptop computer, a gold necklace and a gold bracelet with a total value of $7,000, police said. There was no sign of forced entry but the victim told police she had left a window at a fire escape open.
