Cops save baby
Two Ninth Precinct police officers responded to a desperate call for help from a woman at 355 E. 10th St. between Avenues B and C shortly before 8 p.m. Sat., Jan. 26, who said her 1-year-old daughter was unconscious. Officers William Svenstrup and Keith Gallagher found the baby with no pulse and not breathing. As Svenstrup drove the patrol car to Bellevue Hospital, Gallagher, trained as an emergency medical technician, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The child regained consciousness before they reached the hospital and was said to be in stable condition.
East Village rape
An East Village resident was charged with luring a girl, 15, from Kansas City to New York and raping her in his E. 12th St. apartment, according to the office of Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau.
The suspect, Ronald Rescigno, 48, sent the girl sexual photos over the Internet and invited her to visit him, according to the charges. He then bought train tickets for the victim, who picked them up in Kansas City and came to New York on Sun., Jan. 20, according to the criminal complaint. Rescigno met the victim on her arrival and brought her to his apartment at 520 E. 12th St., where he had sexual intercourse with her and held her for 12 hours. The girl was able to phone her mother, who notified police, according to reports.
Rescigno was being held pending a Feb. 29 arraignment.
Drug sentence
Cordell Lochin, a part owner in The Box, 189 Chrystie St., and La Edquina, 106 Kenmare St., was sentenced to three years in prison on Wed., Jan. 23, by a federal judge in Maine for his role in a ring that smuggled marijuana into the U.S. from Canada. Lochin pleaded guilty to the charges in 2006 in exchange for a two-year reduction in sentence. He has since disputed his ownership interest in the two clubs, but court papers allege that he earns $177,000 annually from them, according to a New York Post article.
Stabs his girlfriend
Police arrested Alan Roberts, 28, and charged him with assault and endangering the welfare of a child for stabbing his girlfriend in the shoulder in the victim’s Jacob Riis Houses apartment on F.D.R. Drive at E. Sixth St. on Friday night Jan. 18 with the victim’s two young children in the apartment. The victim at first told police that someone else stabbed her at a place other than her apartment.
Roberts was arrested Jan. 22, pleaded guilty to second-degree harassment on Jan. 24 and was sentenced to time served.
New Year’s shooting
Haile Mathew, 29, of Brooklyn was arrested Sat., Jan. 19, and charged with attempted murder and second-degree assault in a Lower East Side shooting on Jan. 1, according to the D.A.’s Office.
Mathew brought a loaded 9-millimeter pistol to a New Year’s Eve party at 280 Rivington St. in the Baruch Houses and fired into a group of people in front of the place, according to the charges. One bullet hit a woman in the abdomen and another hit a man in the leg. The man was treated in the hospital and released, but the woman was still hospitalized last weekend. Mathew is being held pending a Feb. 28 arraignment.
TV reporter attacked
Jay DeDapper, a WNBC Channel 4 reporter, was injured on Bleecker St. on Monday night Jan. 21 when three men punched and knocked him down, before fleeing when he fought back, police said. The victim sustained a broken nose.
E. Houston D.W.I.
Police stopped Melvin Clay, 22, in his car at E. Houston St. at Forsyth St. at 5 a.m. Sun., Jan. 27, after noticing his erratic driving. Clay pleaded guilty on Monday to a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Jeans theft
Three suspects charged with shoplifting 25 pairs of designer jeans with a total value of $5,573 from the Bloomingdale’s Soho store at 504 Broadway at Broome St. on Thurs, Jan. 10, pleaded guilty on Jan. 21, according to the D.A.’s Office.
David Barnett, 19, Leonard Reddick, 20, and Jaquan Seales-Acosta, 23, pleaded guilty to burglary, possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools — a metal-lined bag used to avoid detection.
Seek bank robber
Police are seeking a man they identified as Evan King, age 44, 6 feet 2 inches tall and 220 pounds, wanted in connection with three bank robberies, one at 2:14 p.m. Sat., Jan. 12, of a Commerce Bank at 47 Third Ave. at E. 10th St., another about an hour earlier of a Citibank at 115 E. 23rd St. and of a Marathon Bank at 267 Fifth Ave. at E. 29th St. on Dec. 17. Evans is suspected of passing notes demanding money to tellers at the three banks and fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Gym sneaks
A patron of the Equinox fitness club on Greenwich Ave. at W. 12th St. had his wallet stolen from his locker at 3 p.m. Tues., Jan. 15, police said. A patron of New York Sports Club at 34 W. 14th St. told police his wallet had been stolen from his locker at about 4:20 p.m. Fri., Jan. 18.
