Subway death
A Bangladeshi immigrant, Syed Fazle Mowra, 67, died after a northbound No. 6 train struck him in the Broadway-Lafayette station at 6:46 p.m. Sat., Oct. 16, police said. The victim, who worked handing out flyers for a sandwich shop on Canal St., dropped a hearing aid that he had recently acquired onto the tracks and climbed down to find it when the train pulled into the station, according to a New York Post report. A New York University student, Eric Munson, 19, was trying to lift the victim out of the tracks, but the train struck when Mowra was only halfway up.
N.Y.U. false alarms
Three apparently unrelated fire alarms at the Steinhardt School of Education, Bobst Library and the Kaufman Management Center went off within 30 minutes of one another around 2 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 14, forcing hundreds of students to evacuate onto W. Fourth St. on the south side of Washington Sq. Park and briefly closing the street to traffic. A hyperactive fog machine in a Steinhardt classroom set off one alarm and the Kaufman Center alarm went off because of construction in the building, according to Washington Sq. News, the undergraduate newspaper. A technical malfunction that prompted someone to pull a fire alarm was the cause of the Bobst incident. Firefighters left the scene and students were readmitted to the buildings at 2:42 p.m.
Bag lifted in Soho
A patron of a Soho restaurant at 148 Mercer St. told police that someone took her bag from the back of her chair while she was at dinner on Friday night Oct. 8. The bag had $500 in cash, credit cards, personal papers and a digital camera.
Car burglarized in Soho
A woman who returned to her parked car on the southwest corner of W. Houston and Wooster Sts. at 2 a.m. Sat., Oct. 9, found the right front window smashed and the clothes and jewelry she had left there were missing, police said.
Back of the truck
A driver making a delivery at 386 W. Broadway between Broome and Spring Sts. at 11:30 a.m. Fri., Oct. 8 told police that someone had taken some boxes of merchandise while he was gone.
Bar incident
A woman patron of a bar at 323 W. Broadway who became sick and went to the bathroom found that someone had stolen credit cards and $100 in cash from her bag, which she had left at her seat during the early hours of Fri., Oct. 8, police said.
Bike stolen
A man who parked his Harley Davidson motorcycle at the northwest corner of Sixth Ave. and Spring St. returned at 6:30 p.m. Sun., Oct. 10, to find it missing, police said.
