Staten Island, one of the city’s most conservative boroughs, had its first Gay Pride Parade last Saturday. Among politicians attending were mayoral candidates Anthony Weiner and Fernando Ferrer. The parade was held a quarter-mile away from residential areas, but did have its fair share of demonstrators. There was one arrest — for aggravated harassment and disorderly conduct — of a 22-year-old man who yelled, “The Koran forbids you all to do this and you will be punished,” pulled feathers out of marchers’ hats and was generally disruptive. Other protesters held signs with Biblical passages.
