Queens man charged for fatal pedestrian collision in Manhattan: NYPD

A 42-year-old Queens man who allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian in Manhattan in June has been charged with a series of traffic-related offenses, according to police.

Fernando Zabla Ochoa, 42, from Elmhurst, hit a pedestrian at the intersection of 8th Avenue and West 25th Street at around 1:40 p.m. on June 9, police said.

The victim was crossing when Zabla Ochoa in a 2012 Ford E250 made a left turn off 8th Avenue onto West 25th Street. The victim was thrown to the ground and sustained head trauma.  EMS responded to the scene and took the pedestrian to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue. The victim died the next day.

The police did not provide any information as to the identify of pedestrian.

Ochoa Zabala, who remained on the scene, has been charged with driving without a license, failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to show care.

A 91-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured at the same intersection in June 2021. The elderly man was struck by a hit-and-run driver in a pickup truck.
