The Lower East Side Ecology Center will be holding an electronics recycling day at Battery Park City Saturday, Sept. 27 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Two dropoff locations at Chambers St. and North End Av., and Albany St. and South End Ave., will be accepting working and non-working computers (laptop and desktop); computer accessories; plastic-encased TVs and VCRs; fax machines; cell phones and pagers for recycling.
Three similar electronics recycling days have collected over 17 tons of material, which is then broken down into component parts. Usable pieces are reassembled by the Per Scholas organization, a non-profit which resells the reconditioned and upgraded computers to schools and low-income families at low cost. All donations are tax-deductible.
“Cathode tubes from televisions are reusable, for example, even if they’re really old,” said Tara Deporte, director of environmental education at the Lower East Side Ecology Center.
In addition to the electronics recycling event, the ecology center is also planning a “beach cleanup day” beginning at 9 a.m. on a small stretch of sand below the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge. The Ecology Center will be working with the Littoral Society to promote waterfront issues and educate New Yorkers on environmental issues, Deporte said.
