In an installation called “Eyes Wide Open” Quakers placed about 975 pairs of combat boots in Union Square Park last week to represent the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq. The exhibit, which coincided with the Republican National Convention, also included shoes to represent the thousands of Iraqis killed in the war. Since last week, the number of American soldiers killed has surpassed 1,000. A similar grouping was on display in a Boston park during the Democratic National Convention in July.
