As New York approaches the fifth anniversary of the devastating attacks of Sept. 11th, ceremonies this Monday will feature music, art, and royalty, helping to commemorate the loss.
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer will host “Manhattan Remembers,” a sunrise ceremony and service at 6 a.m. with Councilmember Alan Gerson. The annual Battery Park City ceremony will be held in Wagner Park and will feature a variety of music, a poetry reading, and remarks from a Jewish rabbi, a Greek Orthodox pastor and several Protestant reverends.
At 1 p.m. Sarah, the Duchess of York, and her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, will appear at Hanover Square as the honored guests for a free music concert near the site of the British Memorial Garden under construction. The garden will pay tribute to the British citizens killed in the Sept. 11 attack. Jack Straw, leader of the House of Commons will also attend the event sponsored by the British Memorial Garden Trust.
At 7 p.m., O. Aldon James, President of the National Arts Club is hosting a discussion with six independent artists who were living or working around the World Trade Center five years ago. Ted Lawson, Michael Kervel, Lyle Owerko, Max Ernest Greis, Gabe Kirchheimer, and Martin Deegan will discuss how 9/11 affected their work at the Woolworth Tower Kitchen Gallery in the Woolworth Building at 7 Barclay St. The show will hang through Sept. 20th and the hours are 11 a.m. to 7p.m. Both the show and the discussion are free and open to the public. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor George Pataki will host the yearly name-reading ceremony at the World Trade Center site starting with the statewide moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck the North Tower. This year features the parents and grandparents of the victims as the readers. The reading will continue with breaks for moments of silence for the second plane strike and the respective times the towers fell.
