Two Staten Island cops were injured on Sunday night after a gunman opened fire on them while trying to escape a traffic stop.

According to police sources, the incident unfolded at around 7:30 p.m. on May 11 along Port Richmond Avenue near Post Avenue in Port Richmond, where cops in the 121st Precinct attempted to pull over the driver of a Nissan SUV for tinted windows.

However, authorities said, the 31-year-old driver did not stop and raced away inside the vehicle — only to be met seconds later by another police unit.

In an effort to escape, sources said, the driver allegedly opened fire on the officers, sending bullets hurtling into their vehicle and shards of glass cascading into them. The officers did not return fire.

Meanwhile, the driver lost control of the Nissan and collided into a parked car. He was arrested at the scene without further incident, and two guns were recovered from his vehicle.

Two officers were injured by the broken glass; they were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and are recovering, police sources said.

As of Monday morning, charges against the driver are still pending the results of the ongoing investigation.
