Stepan Lazarev, a painter, muralist and sculptor who lived and worked in the Village for 25 years, died Oct. 14 in St. Vincent’s Hospital of a pulmonary blood clot after surgery for a broken shoulder at the age of 67.
Born in France, he taught art in Paris before establishing his studio at 41 West Eighth Street. His paintings have been exhibited in France at Avignon, Marseilles and Toulon and in New York.
In 1979-’80, Stepan Lazarev painted the murals of La Chapelle de Notre Dame de la Consolation, a restored medieval chapel in Arpavon, a mountain village in the South of France. His ashes will be buried in Arpavon in a cemetery overlooking the chapel.
He is survived by his wife, Maria, a son Roman, both of the Village, and by another son Serge and a grandson, both of New Rochelle. A memorial service was held Sun. Oct. 23 at First Presbyterian Church on Fifth Avenue at West 12th Street. Greenwich Village Funeral Home, 199 Bleecker Street, was in charge of arrangements.
