Suspect sought for assaulting a police officer in Union Square Park

The NYPD is looking for a suspect who assaulted a police officer in Union Square Park.

Police say that at 8:16 p.m. on May 15, a 39-year-old male NYPD officer was on duty and in uniform when he was approached by an unknown individual. The suspect proceeded to push a barrier into the officer’s face before fleeing to parts unknown.

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital by EMS in stable condition.

The suspect is described as a man with a slim build who was last seen wearing a black ski mask and all black clothing.

That same night, a group of pro-Palestine protesters demonstrated in the park, which ultimately resulted in the arrest of 39-year-old Maksim Katsnelson, who scaled the George Washington statue. It is unclear if he was directly involved in the initial protest
