Target misses in Tompkins Sq.

Target’s plan to sell low-cost air-conditioning units in Tompkins Square Park was rejected by the Parks Department for reasons undisclosed at this point.

The superstore was planning to hold the sale of the units from two 40-ft. trucks in the surrounding area of the park on Ninth St. at Avenue A to Avenue B on July 11. It’s believed that the units were to be sold in the price range of $75 to $85 apiece with a free handcart for buyers to wheel away their purchases.

Community Board 3 approved Target’s proposal. However, the board’s votes are advisory only. Parks has ultimate jurisdiction.
