The Red Leather DiaryInside an Upper

West Side dumpster, New York Times journalist Lily Koppel found a discarded red leather diary. Flipping through its pages, she discovered the forgotten world of an extraordinary yet unknown woman, Florence Wolfson, daughter of working-class Russian immigrants. Wolfson wrote—without missing a single day between her 14th and 19th birthdays—of trips to the Catskills, horseback riding in Central Park, literary salons, and dances at the Hotel Pennsylvania, providing an intimate glimpse of life during the 1930s. The resulting book and conversation between both women brings an enchanting and glamorous New York to life. July 15 at 6:30 p.m. Free. Tenement Museum Shop. 108 Orchard St. 212-982-8420, tenement.org.
