ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE SUSPENDED THROUGH SUNDAY FOR SNOW REMOVAL; CHECK 311 FOR UPDATES

The First Lady is coming to town! Around 11 a.m. Thursday, she’ll visit the New Museum on the Bowery at Stanton St. Her arrival and departure will slow Bowery down to a crawl.

Next, she will head north to Union Square for a Democratic National Committee event at a donor’s home on Fifth Ave. and 13th St.

Most likely, she will take Bowery to Fourth Ave. and across on 13th St. or 14th St. Avoid the Union Square area from noon to 3 p.m.  Later in the afternoon, the First Lady will head uptown to tape an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” Follow me on Twitter @gridlocksam for the very latest updates on the FLOTUS-LOCK.

All Manhattan-bound lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday, midnight Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday, midnight Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday, and 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Wednesday nights. During these overnight closures, inbound traffic will be rerouted to the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges, as well as the Battery Tunnel. That means more traffic on Canal, Delancey, and West Sts.

On West St./Route 9A, one lane will close in each direction between West Thames and Vesey Sts. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

No F trains between W 4 St and Jay St-MetroTech in either direction 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. F trains will run via the A line between W 4 St and Jay St-MetroTech. For service to Broadway-Lafayette, take the D train.

Washington St. will close between Laight and Hubert Sts. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through the end of the month. Northbound traffic will be detoured to Hudson St.

Nassau St. will close between Ann and Beekman Sts. 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays. Theater

Alley will also close between Ann and Beekman Sts. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.

From the mailbag:

Dear Transit Sam,

You state that it is considered jaywalking and subject to ticketing if you are in the crosswalk when the DON’T WALK sign is flashing.  That is fine if you are at the curb.  What if you are already crossing and it flashes?  Do you stop in the roadway, or finish the crossing? When there is a countdown clock, at least you have advance warning and timing.

John, New York

Dear John,

If you are already in the crosswalk when the DON’T WALK starts flashing it is okay to continue crossing to the other side or to a median, if there is one.  The flashing DON’T WALK really means DON’T START to cross.  Now that we have more versatile technologies we (meaning traffic engineers) should look at changing to the more accurate message.
