ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE IN EFFECT ALL WEEK
(Updated June 24, 2015 with a correction about the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel) June is Pride month, and this weekend is packed with events: a kick-off rally at Pier 26 will take place 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday. Thousands of people will cross the West Side Highway at Laight St. during rush hour. Watch out for highway crossings again Saturday afternoon, with the event ‘Teaze’ at Pier 26 running 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pridefest, a concert series and street fair, will close Hudson Square between Abingdon Square and W 14th St. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The Pride parade runs from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, but streets along its route will be blocked off from the early morning into the evening. So, unless you’re going to watch the parade, stay away from Fifth Ave. between 41st and Eighth Sts., 8th St. between Fifth and Sixth Aves., Christopher St. between Sixth Ave. and Greenwich St., and Greenwich St. between Christopher and Leroy Sts. The post-parade festival will close Hudson St. between Bethune and W 14th Sts. and W 13th St. between Ninth Ave. and W 4th St. in the afternoon and evening.
Friday is the last day of public school before summer vacation. That means the a.m. commute will ease up a bit, and that kids will be out and about. It also means parking spots will open up in “No Parking on School Days” zones. Beware, though, since those rules will be in effect at some schools with certain events. (See the Transit Sam letter below.)
Tunnel trouble ahead: In the Lincoln Tunnel, the New York-bound tube will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. The Lincoln Tunnel closure will send drivers down to the Holland, which will be slow because of its own closure, where one New York-bound and one New Jersey-bound lane will be closed 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. If possible, head back to the city before 11 to avoid delays.
On West St./Route 9A, one southbound lane will be closed between Vesey St. to West Thames St. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday andFriday.
Our Lady of Pompeii Church 6th Avenue Festival will close Sixth Ave. between West Houston St. and Waverly Pl. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.Saturday.
The River to River Living Room event will close Front St. between Beekman St. and Peck Sl. 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Macy’s 5K Run-Walk will close Battery Pl. between West St. and 1st Pl. 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
From the mailbag:
Dear Transit Sam,
Last summer I parked in a “No Parking 8am-4pm School Days” zone. School wasn’t in session, and being that the children weren’t in school, I figured I was fine. But I received a parking summons anyway. What’s up with that?
Lisa, New York
Dear Lisa,
This is a tricky situation, and a good one to be aware of as public schools near their summer recess. Oftentimes schools will hold teacher trainings, conferences, or summer programs for kids during which the “No Parking on School Days” rules are in effect. The only way to know for sure if you’re allowed to park in that zone and avoid another ticket is to call the school and find out their schedule for the day.
