The U.S. Navy has agreed to anchor the U.S.S. New York off the coast of Lower Manhattan to take part in the 10th anniversary ceremonies of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, per the request of Senator Chuck Schumer.
On Tues., Aug. 23, Schumer announced that the U.S.S. New York will offer a backdrop for the anniversary services and will be docked at a local pier several days prior to the ceremony.
“It just didn’t make sense for this powerful and awesome demonstration of American strength, born out of the rubble of 9/11, not to be present for the 10th anniversary ceremonies,” said Schumer. The U.S.S. New York is a transport ship composed of steel salvaged from the former W.T.C., the Senator noted. “Over seven tons of steel from the W.T.C. were used to construct this ship and its return home makes good on its motto, ‘Never Forget.’”
