Wash. Sq. church to be apartments

Mick Walsdorf, a principal in Flank, the new owner of the historic Washington Sq. United Methodist Church at 135 W. Fourth St., confirmed last week that the company intends to preserve the exterior of the 1860 building and convert the inside into residential units.

But plans are not yet far enough along to say how many apartments would be in the project, so Flank cancelled its Aug. 1 date to make a presentation to the Community Board 2 Landmarks Committee, Walsdorf said.

Demolition is not an option because the building is in the Greenwich Village Historic District, “and that’s what we like about the property,” Walsdorf said. He declined, however, to say when the company would apply to the Landmarks Preservation Commission for a certificate of appropriateness and he would not disclose the purchase price of the property.
