Independence Plaza resident Elaine Schweninger traveled down to South Carolina to help out Hillary Clinton’s campaign, including a “honk and holler” in Columbia on Jan. 25.
Schweninger said Clinton and Barack Obama have similar positions on many issues, but she thinks the New Yorker is better equipped to get the change that is needed.
“You have a very charismatic speaker on one hand, and a very effective U.S. senator who knows how to get things done on the other…. [Obama] has almost this Messianic view based on his life story and expects people will follow whatever he wants to do, and I don’t think it works that way.”
She thinks his health plan is unrealistic because it allows healthy young people to opt out, thus driving up the cost.
Schweninger, who also went to Iowa on Clinton’s behalf, had never been to South Carolina. She said the biggest differences from Tribeca were the level of poverty and the tremendous friendliness from everyone she met. There was one similarity that perhaps not all of her neighbors would agree with. “It was quiet at night in the same way it is here.”
