Representative Nydia Velázquez (D-LES, Brooklyn, Queens) released a series of tweets yesterday expressing her dismay at a recent hate crime in Jersey City.

On Tuesday, a group of gun-wielding assailants attacked a Kosher market in Jersey City, killing three people. Shortly afterward, the police concluded that the shooting was a targeted anti-Semitic attack.

“I am heartbroken and outraged by the antisemitic attack on our neighbors in Jersey City,” said Velázquez. “I was especially saddened to hear two of the victims had roots in our Williamsburg community. Hate crimes are on the rise around the nation. All of us must speak with one voice in condemning hate in all its forms. Those with hate in their hearts cannot win. We will not let them. We must be better than this.”

Maloney, Thompson Release Staff Report on Coast Guard Mishandling Harassment Complaints

Yesterday, Representatives Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens) and Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released a joint staff report, finding that the Coast Guard has mishandled complaints of harassment and bullying and failed to hold the perpetrators accountable.

The investigation was launched eight months ago to examine the handling of harassment complaints and retaliation in the Coast Guard. Based on thousands of pages of documentation, the investigation found that the Coast Guard has consistently failed to conduct impartial investigations of harassment and bullying, or hold officials accountable for incomplete investigations. It has also failed to address retaliation against those who report harassment.

“I applaud our late Chairman for his extraordinary leadership on this issue, and we will continue this work to ensure whistleblowers are protected when alleging misconduct in the workplace,” said Maloney. “This report shows that the Coast Guard repeatedly swept allegations of bullying and harassment under the rug, and did not hold senior officials accountable for their actions. The Coast Guard should fully adopt the recommendations in this report to prevent these abuses from happening in the future. No employee should ever feel unsafe at work or worry about retaliation for sounding the alarm on misconduct.”
