Assemblymember Carmen De La Rosa (D-Upper Manhattan) released a tweet yesterday in recognition of National Latina Equal Pay Day.

The day is meant to highlight the earnings gap between the average Latina worker and the average white male worker. It takes place on Nov. 20, the day that the average Latina worker’s wages “catch up” to what the average white man made in 2018.

“The quest for gender pay equity will always live with me and my input as a legislator will remain unequivocal until we reach to a point where disparity for equal pay is reached and we are compensated based solely on capacity and skills and not on gender,” said De La Rosa. “Let’s end the wage gap and secure a brighter future for our daughters.”

Council Members Margaret Chin (D-Battery Park City, Chinatown) and Carlina Rivera (D-East Village, Gramercy Park), Co-Chairs of the Women’s Caucus, released a joint statement yesterday recognizing the twentieth annual Trans Day of Remembrance.

The Trans Day of Remembrance, first observed in 1999, was created to memorialize the transgender people who lost their lives as a result of transphobic violence.

“Trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals continue to face harassment, violence, assault and murder at staggering rates across the country,” reads the statement. “This prejudice is often compounded with other social inequalities, such as racism, classism, and religious discrimination, which can impact the access that TGNC people have to housing, education and job prospects. For Transgender Day of Remembrance and beyond, the Women’s Caucus will continue to advocate on behalf of all TGNC New Yorkers.”

Maloney: “Protecting the 2020 Census Protects New York”

Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens) released a statement on Tuesday about the importance of ensuring that all of New York gets counted in the 2020 Census.

Maloney made the statement shortly after Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) announced that he would be investing $60 million into efforts to ensure a proper count.

“The 2020 Census determines critical funding and representation for New York State, and we cannot afford to get it wrong,” said Maloney. “I thank Governor Cuomo, CUNY, SUNY and the State agencies who are using their resources to launch a statewide Census awareness campaign to ensure an accurate count of all New Yorkers. This critical and unprecedented $60 million brings us one step closer to a full and accurate count. Protecting the 2020 Census protects New York and our future.”
