Yesterday, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer (D) awarded grants to 12 community organizations as part of her Make Manhattan Count initiative to fund outreach efforts and encourage participation in advance of the 2020 Census.

Brewer started the initiative to incentivize community-based organizations to come up with creative ways to reach under-counted communities.

“There’s a lot at stake for New York City in the 2020 Census, from federal funding to our representation in Congress, so we have to make sure all Manhattan residents are counted,” said Brewer. “We studied historically under-counted communities to decide where extra work is needed and these organizations gave us the best proposals.”

Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou (D-Chinatown, Financial District) was a guest speaker at Monday night’s rally for Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

At the rally, Niou touted Warren as a candidate we can trust to implement large-scale systematic change and take money out of politics.

“She is the brilliant woman we need to lead us forward,” said Niou. “In the State Legislature, we’ve fought to pass comprehensive changes. We’ve changed our system, and we have made it our mission to make our government more inclusive and transparent. And we support Elizabeth Warren, because she will represent that mission.”

Council Speaker Corey Johnson (D-Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen) rallied with representatives from Transportation Alternatives yesterday in support of his “Streets Master Plan” bill.

The bill would create 50 additional miles of bike lanes and 30 miles of bus lanes each year. It would also require the Department of Transportation to conduct a public street safety education plan and regularly update it.

“We will not fix our city streets with thoughts and prayers,” said Johnson. “We will fix our city streets with concrete, direct action by government.”
