New Yorkers will receive up to $400 this fall in inflation rebate checks, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday.
Hochul said 3.53 million eligible households in NYC will receive the funding by mail starting in October and continuing through November.
New Yorkers do not have to apply to receive a check. Those who qualify will automatically get a check. The initiative was passed as part of the recently approved FY2026 state budget.
“I’ll never stop fighting to help your family address the rising cost of living – and that’s why I also delivered on my promise to cut taxes for the middle class, expand the child tax credit and ensure free school meals for every student,” the governor said in a statement.
She said the money helps offset inflation, which has driven the costs of everyday necessities higher. As a result, the state’s revenue from sales tax collection has also increased.
“Governor Hochul believes that money belongs to hardworking New York families and should be put back in their pockets as an inflation refund,” a press release from the governor’s office stated.
Who is eligible for an inflation refund check?
Anyone who meets the state’s criteria will receive an inflation check. New Yorkers are eligible for the money if, for tax year 2023, they:
- Filed Form IT-201, New York State Resident Income Tax Return
- Reported income within the qualifying thresholds
- Were not claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return
How much will taxpayers receive?
According to NYS, joint tax filers with income up to $150,000 will receive a $400 check; those who earn over $150,000 but no more than $300,000 will receive a $300 check.
Single tax filers with income up to $75,000 will receive a $200 check; those with over $75,000 but no greater than $150,000 will receive a $150 check.
