In New York City, nearly two million residents face food insecurity, and many neighborhoods lack convenient access to supermarkets. That’s why Amazon began working to bridge the grocery gap when it introduced Amazon Access, an online hub where customers can explore programs, discounts, and features that make shopping on Amazon easier and more affordable.
Leading the company’s efforts has been Nancy Dalton, Director of Amazon Access. “I know how difficult it can be for people to feed themselves and their families, especially when facing lack of time or transportation challenges,” says Dalton. “Amazon Access offers several convenient and affordable options to help.”
Many New Yorkers can benefit from Amazon Access programs designed to make grocery shopping more affordable and convenient, particularly the 1.7 million residents who rely on SNAP benefits. Amazon Access offers SNAP EBT and Cash EBT payment acceptance, and additional ways to save through a Discounted Grocery Delivery Subscription program ($4.99/month) and Prime Access (all the benefits of a regular Prime membership at 50% of the cost).
These services are especially valuable for those SNAP recipients who live in areas with low access to healthy food, face mobility challenges, work long hours, simply wish to avoid carrying heavy groceries on public transit, or are struggling to make ends meet. For elderly residents or those with disabilities, reliable delivery can be essential for accessing healthy food options. For SNAP recipients, the ability to use benefits online while minimizing delivery fees makes healthy food more accessible and affordable.

These programs are especially helpful in outer borough neighborhoods where supermarket access is limited. Residents in parts of the South Bronx, East New York, and Southeast Queens — areas traditionally considered to have low access to healthy food – can access fresh groceries and even have them conveniently delivered to their door with the help of Amazon Access.
For Nancy Dalton, this mission is deeply personal. “Growing up, my mother was a SNAP recipient, and I remember relying on those funds to make sure we had food on the table. I’ve never forgotten how it shaped me as an individual,” she said. ” This is why I believe so strongly in our mission at Amazon Access – financial circumstances are rarely permanent, and support systems should adapt accordingly. Amazon wants to be there for customers throughout their journey, especially when they need us the most.”
Customers can use their SNAP EBT benefits to shop for fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, everyday pantry essentials like pasta, rice, and beans, or quick and healthy snacks. Customers can also explore Cash EBT eligible items beyond groceries like electronics, household items, clothing, and more. Through these initiatives, Amazon is working to ensure that all New Yorkers, regardless of their circumstances, have access to a wide range of quality grocery items and everyday essentials at low, competitive prices, which are made available via convenient delivery and in-store shopping options across Amazon.com, Whole Foods Market, and Amazon Fresh.
