Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera’s gruesome leg injury suffered in the ninth inning of Monday night’s 11-5 win over the Seattle Mariners is a left ankle fracture, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon while placing him on the 10-day injured list.
Tagging up from third to score the Yankees’ 11th and final run of the night on Aaron Judge’s sacrifice fly, Cabrera sidestepped catcher Cal Raleigh before reaching back to touch home plate, which is when the injury occurred.
He was down for several minutes before he was loaded up on a gurney, with his leg put in an air cast, and departed T-Mobile Park in an ambulance.
“Right before he got carted off, he just called me over and said, ‘Hey, did I score?’” Judge said (h/t AP). “So, it just kind of shows you what type of guy he is. Something like that happens, and the one thing on his mind for all the pain and everything is, ‘Did I score?’”
Cabrera had helped fill in for injured third baseman DJ LeMahieu, who was reinstated from the IL on Tuesday. He was batting .243 with a home run and 12 RBI.
“Everyone understands it’s a pretty serious situation,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “We’re just praying for our guy, Cabby, tonight and hoping for the best and trusting that he’s in good hands as he goes through the night here.”
