PGA in the Book: Previewing 2024 PGA Championship, odds, more

The 2024 PGA Championship is set to tee off Thursday at the legendary Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY. In one of the rare occasions we get to see the LIV Tour and the PGA Tour come together to compete, this year’s field is shaping up to be one of the most competitive ones in recent memory. Let’s look at the book’s best value ahead of this week’s major.

Outright Winners

  • Rory McIlroy +750
  • Ludvig Aberg +2000
  • Max Homa +3500

A return to Valhalla will bring warm memories for McIlroy, the 2014 PGA Championship winner who bested Phil Mickelson by a stroke as a 25-year-old looking to burst onto the PGA Tour scene. Now a decade later, McIlroy returns a seasoned veteran looking to turn back the clock one more time. After a disappointing +4, T-22 finish at Augusta, McIlroy has put together impressive finishes in tournaments since then. Most recently coming off a victory at the Wells Fargo Championship this past Sunday where the Northern Ireland native posted a 65 on Sunday. In a place that McIlroy is familiar with and has won before, it’s no surprise he is one of the favorites this week, and he should be one of your favorites too.

Aberg put the tour on notice early this year after a second-place finish at Pebble Beach during the AT&T Championship. He cemented his name as a serious contender on tour after a second-place finish at The Masters. Now, Aberg has a chance to secure his first-ever major this weekend. The mental fortitude is present for Aberg, an essential piece of winning a major. The Sweden native has shown an affinity for playing longer courses, and with Valhalla playing over 7,600 yards, Aberg could find himself near the top of the leaderboard come Sunday.

After a disappointing finish at +9 at last year’s PGA Championship and giving away a golden opportunity to contend at The Masters, Homa seems due for his first career major win. Coming off two top-ten finishes out of his last three tournaments, Homa is playing elite golf. He has even spoken openly about his mentality entering majors and the confidence he has in his ability to win when he is playing at his best. Considering how solid of a ball striker Homa has proven himself to be while playing some of the best golf in his career, Homa is worth taking a flier on as a long-shot champion.

Top 10 Finisher

  • Sahith Theegala +500
  • Sam Burns +500

Theegala made a name for himself early in this PGA Tour season with two top-10 finishes in his first five starts. Theegala’s Achilles heel remains consistency, as he has five T-45 finishes/cuts or worse and five T-10 finishes or better this season. It is not out of the ordinary for a rising star to finish top ten at the PGA Championship either. Sepp Straka and Kurt Kitayama both secured top-10 finishes at last year’s major despite never being in the top 50 prior. Theegala could follow a similar path this year and find himself in contention on Sunday.

Similar to Theegala, Burns has dealt with his fair share of ups and downs this PGA Tour season. Burns started the year scorching hot with four top-ten finishes in his first five tournaments. Since then, his best finish came last week at the Wells Fargo Championship where he finished T13 at -2. Burns seems to finally be turning a corner after a couple of months of struggles just in time for the PGA Championship. With the value at +500 for a top-ten finish, it is worth giving Burns a look.

Big Guns (Scheffler/McIlroy/Koepka) vs. The Field

  • Big Guns +160

We have already talked about how McIlroy has cemented himself as one of the favorites this week. Combine that with the current best golfer in the world Scottie Scheffler and the defending champion Brooks Koepka, a value of +165 is too good to pass over. These three are the clear favorites for a reason, and with the DK Sportsbook offering a special at this value, the opportunity is too good to pass over.
