Which NY sports team weighs the most?

  • Not surprisingly, a football team is tops on the list. The Giants had the top average (241 lbs), median (233 lbs) and total weight (26,804 lbs) of all eight teams, with 17 players weighing in excess of 300 pounds. By comparison, the Jets checked in at an average of 237 pounds, a median weight of 218 pounds and a total of 24,430 pounds with 16 players weighing more than 300 pounds. For a comparable, the average New York City subway car (empty) weighs about 25,000 pounds.

  • The Knicks' median weight of 225 pounds beats the Nets’ 219 pounds. But Brooklyn edges out New York in average weight 222 pounds to 221. The Nets' roster also owns a slim lead in heaviest team, 3,113 pounds to 3,087 pounds. At just over 3,000 pounds, a basketball team is around the weight of a regular car.

  • The Rangers and Islanders are the lightest squads in New York and, just as in the Metropolitan Division standings through games of March 17, the Rangers lead the Isles. The Rangers have a median weight of 196 pounds and an average weight of 200 pounds. The Islanders have a median and average weight of 204 pounds. In the standings, the Rangers lead the Isles by five points heading into Wednesday night. In the weight department, they're four pounds under.

  • Weight is just one more thing the Yankees have over the Mets. The Yankees have a median weight of 210 pounds, an average of 212 pounds and a total team weight of 8,500 pounds. The Mets have a median weight of 205 pounds, an average of 207 pounds and total 8,260 pounds. But there is some good news for the Mets: righthander Bartolo Colon (pictured), who has been ribbed about his weight by some in the media since joining the Mets, can legitimately claim to be on the thinner squad.

Which New York sports team weighs the most? We looked at the median, average and total weight as calculated from the current 40-man rosters of the Yankees and Mets, current rosters (as of March 18) of the Knicks, Nets, Rangers and Islanders and the 2014 roster for the Giants and Jets. We did not, however, calculate the weight of expectations. That’s best left to fans.
