Fashion designer Rachel Roy responded Sunday to Internet rumors alleging she is the mystery woman in music star Beyoncé’s “Sorry,” a track from Saturday’s surprise-release album “Lemonade” — a collection of songs centering on marital and relationship strife that is currently only available on Tidal, the music streaming service Beyoncé partially owns .
Roy — the ex-wife of producer Damon Dash, a former business partner of Beyoncé’s husband, rapper-producer Jay Z — appeared to address the lyrics “He only want me when I’m not on there / He better call Becky with the good hair.” On her now-private Instagram account, Roy, who is in her early 40s, wrote, “Good hair don’t care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always. live in the light #nodramaqueens.”
After this came a barrage of harsh comments from Beyoncé fans on Roy’s social media. Roy’s Wikipedia page was subjected to serial vandalism, forcing an administrator to protect it against new or unregistered editors. Roy eventually posted on Twitter, “I respect love, marriages, families and strength. What shouldn’t be tolerated by anyone, no matter what, is bullying, of any kind.”
Rumors of infidelity — never confirmed — arose in May 2014, when an elevator surveillance video surfaced that showed Beyoncé’s sister, singer Solange Knowles, pummeling her brother-in-law Jay Z while Beyoncé simply looked on. Shot at Manhattan’s Standard Hotel on May 5, following a party after the annual Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, it quickly went viral.
Days after the video was posted, Beyoncé, 34, Jay Z, 46, and Knowles, 29, released a statement saying in part that “our family has worked through it. Jay and Solange … both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.”
