The Museum of the Moving Image will be premiering a local director’s new film at the end of the month.

“Spirit Riser” follows the story of two sisters who are tossed onto opposite sides of the country by a cosmic entity. The two sisters are pursued by the entity and along the way, they discover their own supernatural powers.

With blends of fantasy, horror, comedy, action and surrealism, director Dylan Mars Greenberg features her real-life sister Summer in the film, adding an extra level of authenticity to the sibling dynamic of the story. Greenberg says that “Spirit Riser” is a love letter to New York City.

“This film took me six years to complete and was a true labor of love,” says Greenberg. “Museum of the Moving Image was a huge part of my childhood and inspired me to make movies, and we are honored to have the film premiere where my own love for film began.”

The film will screen as part of programmer and playwright Jesse Berberich’s notable “Disreputable Cinema” series which showcases offbeat and unusual genre films from across the world.

Joining the cast of the film includes Amanda Flowers, Michael Madsen, Cherie Currie, Kansas Bowling, and Parker Love Bowling. “Spirit Riser” also marks the final on-screen appearance of the late rock star Alan Merrill, who wrote and performed the original version of the iconic song “I Love Rock and Roll.”

“Spirit Riser” will premiere at the museum’s Redstone Theater at 6 p.m. on March 30. Tickets start at $15 for general admission, $11 for seniors and students, $9 for youth (ages 3–17) and free for MoMI members at the Senior/Student level and above.
