New York Fashion Week: Heron Preston, Dept. of Sanitation team up for upcycled collection

Turns out the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has a place at Fashion Week.

Artist and designer Heron Preston collaborated with the DSNY Foundation for New York’s Strongest to debut his latest line, UNIFORM. The collection was created using upcycled DSNY clothing and archived uniforms to created a bold line of streetwear.

Preston’s collection was presented at a unique NYFW venue: the DSNY’s Salt Shed in Manhattan, where apparel was pinned to boards and presented outside. Looks prominently featured the DSNY logos, and the classic forest green, orange and neon yellow colors of the sanitation uniforms. Long-sleeved shirts, tees, pants and ball caps dominated the collection, sticking to Preston’s known casual, street style aesthetic.

Though bold streetwear enthusiasts will scoop up the line, there is another incentive to purchase items from UNIFORM. The collection is meant to raise awareness of the DSNY’s Zero Waste initiative, the department’s plan to reduce landfill waste contribution to zero by 2030. A portion of sales will go to the DSNY Foundation.

The collection was available for purchase at the presentation and will be accessible to online shoppers on Thursday at HPCxDSNY.com.
