The Strand Book Store is opening a new location near Lincoln Center this summer.
The new store will take ownership of the Shakespeare & Co. location at 2020 Broadway, between 69th and 70th streets. The Strand will take ownership of the lease effective June 1, and the store is expected to reopen in July after a month-long closure to restock and complete minor renovations.
“Shakespeare & Co. has been an invaluable and treasured resource on the West Side since the 1980s and in 2018 opened a store near Lincoln Center to build on this tradition,” said Strand owner, Nancy Bass Wyden. “The Strand Book Store aims to honor and continue this legacy as we expand our presence on the Upper West Side with the addition of this new store. And of course, all current Shakespeare & Co. booksellers and baristas will retain their employment with us.”
This store will be the third Strand location and will be called The Strand at Lincoln Center. The 2,500-square-foot space will include the bookstore and a café.
This addition to The Strand’s 18 Miles of books builds on the legacy of Bass Wyden’s father and his father before him, who opened the store in 1927. In 2027, the store will celebrate its centennial and continues to sustain literacy in New York by providing a welcoming space for all readers.
“We cannot wait to deepen our commitment to the Upper West Side by offering all the great things The Strand is known for: exquisite curation of new, used, and rare books, our Blind Date with a Book program, Studio Strand and other bookish merchandise, expert bookseller recommendations, and our extensive event programming for children and adults,” said Bass Wyden.
