A 61-year-old NYPD tow truck driver died behind the wheel of his vehicle Monday night after apparently suffering a “medical episode” police officials said.
The driver was identified by police as Anthony Edgehill, a long-time driver for the NYPD traffic division. Despite efforts by firefighters and EMS crews to revive him, he was pronounced dead at nearby Mount Sinai Hospital on Kings Highway in Midwood, Brooklyn, according to law enforcement sources.
The incident occurred at 5:51 p.m. as Edgehill was driving south on Flatbush Avenue in the light snow fall when he apparently suffered the “medical episode” at a slow speed near Avenue R. The tow truck, a 2015 Ford F550, steered towards the sidewalk and came to rest against a small tree in front of Unique U Nails in front of 2198 Flatbush Avenue.
Police from the 63rd Precinct found him “unconscious and unresponsive,” officials said. Firefighters located a block away rushed to the scene and performed CPR, but could not revive him.
NYPD Highway #2 Collision investigators were on scene, but sources said it appears the driver died from an unknown medical condition, but police on scene believed it to be a heart attack.
