A sacred healthcare site

“Madonna Owns This,” someone wrote on the Coleman Building, part of the former St. Vincent’s Hospital, which closed April 30. Some hospital advocates argue that a new hospital could be housed in just Coleman — which is only 28 years old — and that it wouldn’t be necessary to use the rest of the former St. Vincent’s Greenwich Village hospital campus. But all the property is tied up in Bankruptcy Court and expected to be sold to pay off the former Catholic hospital’s $1 billion debt to creditors. The Madonna referred to is probably the Virgin Mary, not the “Material Girl” — but who knows?
