Afghan lecture and photos

Michael Luongo, freelance travel writer and photographer, is presenting an Afghanistan Photo Lecture sponsored by the Globetrotters Series of New York Saturday.

There will be photos of Kabul, Mazar, Jalabad, Herat, and the holy city of Kandahar, former headquarters of the Taliban as well as from the voter registration process of the upcoming Afghan elections, the haunting Pansheer Valley tomb of Massoud, the leader of the Northern Alliance who was murdered by the Al Qaeda just days before our own Sept. 11, 2001.

Luongo recently wrote an article in the Downtown Express profiling Tribeca resident Baktash Zaher Khadem, chairperson of the New York City based Afghan-American Peace Corps, and his mother, Zeba Khadem, a Voice of America international broadcaster with the Afghanistan division in Washington D.C., and their efforts to bring cows, goats and chickens to needy Afhan women and children living in the villages surrounding the city.

The lecture is on Saturday, September 18 at 4.

Admission is $8/$10 members/nonmembers at Wings Theatre on 154 Christopher St. More information is available at www.globetrottersnyc.com.
