Brooklyn man charged with homicide after hitting 9-year-old boy with SUV

A Brooklyn man was arrested and charged with negligent homicide after his SUV jumped a curb in Fort Greene and killed a 9-year-old boy on Saturday, the NYPD said.

Anthony Byrd, 59, of Clinton Hill, killed Lucian Merryweather after losing control of his 2000 Ford Expedition around 12:50 p.m. Saturday, colliding with several cars before slamming into the boy, his family and another woman, the NYPD said.

The child was pinned underneath the SUV and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

His 5-year-old brother was taken to Kings County Hospital Center and listed in stable condition. His 48-year-old mother, who was uninjured, was also taken to Kings County, according to police.

Another woman, 28, who was hit by the SUV while walking in the crosswalk, was also taken to Kings County with a leg injury and was listed in stable condition, police said.

Byrd remained at the scene and didn’t appear to be impaired, The New York Times reported.

He was also charged with assault, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, reckless driving and other traffic charges.
