BY DENNIS LYNCH | It shouldn’t be a surprise that the vast majority of people in Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen are liberal and support Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Those people are showing their support with donations, according to the folks at RentHop who mapped donations in the city by zip code to get a feel for how New Yorkers were showing their support with their wallets.

As of last month, 98.2% of donors in Chelsea and at least 91% of voters living between W. 23rd St. and W. 59th St. gave to the former Secretary of State over Republican rival Donald Trump and this election’s two third party candidates, the Green Party’s Jill Stein and the Libertarian Party’s Gary Johnson.

In the past, btw. W. 48th & W. 59th Sts., more people donated to Republican candidates than Democratic rivals — but this election has flipped that trend. Image via RentHop.com.

As of October, more than 3,000 people in the area have donated to Clinton. Most of them donated in the months since she accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination at its convention in July, but she heavily out-fundraised Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders before accepting that nomination, in some months by more than three-to-one.

Conversely, more Republicans gave to other candidates seeking their party’s nomination over now-nominee Donald Trump. No Republicans in the 10011 zip code covering Chelsea below W. 23rd St. gave to Trump until June and since then only 25 have written him checks. 59 donors gave to other candidates in the months leading up to April, after which donations stagnated. RentHop’s figures do not parse out which of the 11 candidates those donations went to, which means they could be spread out between them.

The story was similar north of Chelsea: Clinton squarely dominated in all of those zip codes while Trump flopped. The closest contest was in the 10018 zip code between W. 35th and W. 41st Sts. from Fifth Avenue West, but it wasn’t close — 171 donors gave Clinton $261, 134 and 16 donors gave Trump $16,516.

Donors living between parts of the Village north to W. 59th Street gave more than $6.4 million to Clinton’s campaign and only around $114,000 to Trump. Trump’s supporters were willing to dig a bit deeper in their pockets though — the average Trump donor gave the real estate mogul $187, while the average Clinton donor gave her $88.

The results suggest that many moderate Republican donors are wary of supporting their party’s brash populist nominee this year, which reflects the dilemma the GOP’s leadership has been in this cycle.
