Passersby on Canal Street at the corner of Bowery may be unaware that they’re being filmed, but “Chinatown WORK, 2006,” an installation by Eric Schuldenfrei and Marisa Yiu, does just that. As a person walks by the HSBC storefront, silhouettes are taken and overlayed on the street scenes above. Their profiles are then filled with interior scenes that define Chinatown’s contemporary work culture, including garment factories, restaurants and laundries. The thin red outline of a profile pops up on the Chinatown scenes every tenth person or so, though few pedestrians actually stop and notice the public art installation, which runs from 7:30 p.m. – 11 p.m. through May 21. Without any signage to inform people of the interactive art project, one observer told the Downtown Express that it looks like just “another illuminated ad to be ignored.” For more information on the project, visit www.eskyiu.com.
