Ten protesters were arrested outside the Varick St. Immigration Detention Center on Tuesday while rallying for the release of a Haitian man who faces deportation. The protesters, including eight clergy, were among a group of about 100 people who joined hands outside the center, at 201 Varick St. at Houston St., waving posters and photos and blocking the street. They were objecting to the Dec. 30 detention of Jean Montrevil, an immigration activist who might be deported based on a 1989 drug conviction, even though he previously served more than 10 years in prison for it. Montrevil is now being held in Pennsylvania’s York County Prison, where he is on a hunger strike, according to the nonprofit New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City. Montrevil has received the support of local elected officials, including Congressmembers Jerrold Nadler and Nydia Velazquez, the coalition said.
